Testimonial to Kaisho UK

Our son Owen has dyslexia and dyspraxia who has been seeing a Physiotherapist
and Occupational therapist for number of years. We were advised by them to take
our son to a martial art club. We looked around and found Kaisho Martial Arts.

Where we meet Sensei Sean Connley, and after watching Sean with the juniors one
thing stood out for us, is how Sean made every student feel valued, more so with the
juniors.

Sean teaches the students respect as well as all aspects of Ju-jitsu, Karate, and
Kickboxing, through plenty of praise, and because of this Sean has given Owen the
confidence he needs to help him overcome is difficulties! Which has helped Owen
believe in himself?

We took our son back to 12 months later to see his Physiotherapist who said he had
noticed a big improvement in Owen balance, Co ordination and sequence skills, and
because of this we have been told that Owen should be discharged from seeing the
Physiotherapist.

Through Sean, both our boys have fun and keep fit at the same time. We would also
like to thank Sean for being a great teacher and mentor. We would advice anyone to
come and train here.

Hi Sean,

Sean Connley provides a fun based approach to martial arts learning. He understands the importance of nurturing my son’s confidence by putting emphasis on praise and reward. It’s great to watch the children enjoy learning as a team whilst at the same time feeling comfortable in striving as an individual. My son has been a victim of bullying and  low morale . He has very much felt the pressures of early school life. I have really appreciated the support offered to me and guidance given to my boy on how best to deal with those issues . I think that Sean allows the children to flourish by recognising that no two children are the same and in a group situation he manages each child’s sensibilities with warmth and encouragement and a result he has earned their respect.

Hello, my name is Piers and I train with Sensei Connley at both the Harpenden and St Albans clubs. In addition, I help assist with the Junior class in St Albans and also the KJR self defence classes.

My involvement with Kaisho Ju Jitsu Ryu dates back to 2007. At the time I’d recently moved to the Harpenden area and was looking to get involved with clubs and activities outside of work.

One evening I received a flyer through the door which featured an imposing looking guy with his fists raised, telling me that a new club was starting around the corner. I headed along to see what this was about.

Now, as a bit of background, I’d spent a couple of years in the past doing a different martial art and my memories of that include learning to count in Korean and doing knuckle press ups (to harden the hands for punching, apparently). It was also a fairly formal arrangement with strict movements to be learned in certain sequences, and these would be displayed at grading to progress to the next belt level.

A lot of martial arts are like this.

So, when I went along to the introduction session, I was expecting more of the same. Some guy telling me why his martial art was the best and how I’d need to worship him and count in Swahili to succeed.

At the session, the imposing guy introduced himself as Sean and started to talk through his journey with the martial arts. What became clear was that he wasn’t like other instructors I’ve known. Here was someone who’s put in the time (31 years) and knows the skills. Here was someone who’s been in situations that have required real world skills (5 years on the door). Here was someone who is able to blend the best parts from a variety of martial arts (kickboxing, boxing, karate, ju jitsu).

And the training sessions reflect this.

The Kaisho Ju Jitsu Ryu that is taught involves the kicking and punching from kickboxing, and the throws, locks and groundwork from Ju Jitsu.

Each session, Sean introduces a new technique or combination of techniques, and there is plenty of time to practice and build on existing skills and ability.

The clubs have a good mix of all ages, men and woman, beginners and those more experienced.

So, if you are thinking of getting involved with the martial arts, or have already got experience and want to try something different, give Sean a shout. He’s not as imposing as he looks.

Hi Sean,

I just wanted to say how much REMOVED enjoys Jujitsu and how much confidence it has given him. REMOVED has had a really really tough year at school  and Jujitsu has always been a highlight of his week where you make such an effort to connect with him, encourage him and acknowledge his success. It means a lot to REMOVED and to us.  You are a great Sensei – thank you so much.

Many thanks

Hi Sean

Thanks for your e.mail. I think Tom would love to hear from you and we would like to buy you the new award as compensation and would love it if Tom got to show it at school as he never got to do this! He is such a great boy but as I say can be very hyper and aggressive on occasion and lacks greatly in confidence when on his own. Already we have seen a change in him since joining Ju Jitsu and think that it will do him the world of good so we are very grateful to have found you.

Have a very happy New Year.

Deborah

Hi Sean

Just wanted to say many thanks for such a good self defence course over the past 5 weeks.  You created an environment in which everyone could feel comfortable and relaxed about a tricky subject.  I was particularly impressed by your sensitivity and awareness with regard to the teenagers in the group and to me as ‘mum’!

I wish you much success in the future with your new ventures, I’m sure you’ll do very well.

Best wishes

Karen
